Balestard refers to the name of a canon of the Chapter of Saint-Émilion, while La Tonnelle is the very old 15th-century stone watchtower that can still be seen today at the heart of the Balestard La Tonnelle vineyard. In fact, the château owes its fame to François Villon, who quoted it in a poem that can be seen on the label of every bottle. The cru's 10.5 hectares are ideally situated at the top of a pretty hillside on a clay-limestone plateau, just outside the medieval town of Saint-Émilion. Its owner, Jacques Capdemourlin, has for decades been perpetuating the art of making generous, highly elegant wines that perfectly reflect what the Saint-Emilion Grands Crus Classés family, of which he is a member, is capable of offering the most demanding connoisseurs.
