As with Château Ausone, the history of Château La Gaffelière dates back to Antiquity, with traces of Roman mosaics and ruins on the site. But it wasn't until much later, in the 16th century, that the château became associated with the de Malet Roquefort family, who have owned the estate continuously since 1705. A rare feat for this family, attested to as the oldest in Saint-Emilion! First established in Aquitaine in 1654 with the birth of the de Malet Roquefort branch, the family first settled in Lugasson, at Château de Roquefort. For more than three centuries, the family has ensured the château's renown and preserved its traditions, while never hesitating to undertake major works and efforts to modernize the château and its production tools, such as the circular, all-concrete ageing cellar built in 1990 by architect Philippe Mazières: a first on the Right Bank. The same was true in 2013 for the stainless-steel vat room with its 20 purple truncated-cone tanks for parcel-based vinification. Today, La Gaffelière is still run by Count Léo de Malet-Roquefort and one of his five children, Alexandre, who joined him in 2004. The estate is oenologically supervised by the renowned consultant-oenologist Stéphane Derenoncourt. La Gaffelière lies between the hills of Château Pavie and Ausone. La Gaffelière has nothing to envy its two famous neighbors. With its 38 hectares of south-facing vineyards (including 22 hectares classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé), the château produces wines of great depth, fruit generosity and balance on three specific types of terroir. In fact, the parcels cover the three ideal situations typical of Saint-Emilion Grand Crus: the limestone plateau, the clay-limestone slope and the foot of the slope. The result is highly expressive wines with a true house signature.
