Château Canon La Gaffelière, First Great Classified Growth of Saint-Emilion

In the early 19th century, the Canon La Gaffelière estate was first known as La Gaffelière-Boitard, after its first owner. In 1971, this 19.5-hectare château, ideally situated on the hillside and at the foot of the slopes, south of the village of Saint-Emilion, became the property of the Counts von Neipperg, a family with eight centuries of winemaking tradition. Count Stephan von Neipperg took over the reins in 1983. Rewarded for his efforts and applying a progressive approach to viticulture, Stephan von Neipperg developed the estate to become one of the most sought-after brands by the wine trade and international markets. In fact, the estate is Premier Grand Cru Classé B in Saint-Emilion, a just reward for its terroir combining clay-limestone and sandy-clay soils with a siliceous character. In such conditions, grapes such as Merlot and Cabernet Franc (in parity, which is rare within the appellation) develop their ripeness in good conditions. The 2014 vintage marks the first year of organic production, enabling the von Neipperg family to offer precise, elegantly structured wines of great complexity. Thus, the excellence and depth of Canon la Gaffelière wines, vintage after vintage, continues to strengthen the affection of discerning consumers for its wines. The von Neipperg family also owns the excellent Châteaux La Mondotte and Clos de l'Oratoire in Saint-Emilion, as well as Château d'Aiguilhe in Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux.
