Château Du Tertre, Classified Growth in 1855.

Learn more about Château Du Tertre, Fifth Classified Growth in 1855 on the Margaux appellation.

Created in the 18th century by an Irish merchant, Pierre Mitchell, who fell in love with the region and its wines, and founded Bordeaux's first glassworks, Château Du Tertre occupies one of the finest locations in the Margaux appellation, with its 52 hectares situated on the appellation's high gravelly hilltops. Flanked by an elegant château, the vineyards have had everything they need for centuries to produce and age refined wines. So much so, in fact, that Du Tertre's reputation made it one of the Médoc crus included in the imperial classification of 1855. Indeed, among the illustrious families who headed the estate, one in particular was close to Emperor Napoleon III (the initiator of the 1855 Imperial Classification). It was the Koenigswarter family who saw their estate classified as a 5th Cru Classé. In 1997, the Dutchman Éric Albada Jelgersma (known for owning the 4th Cru Classé in 1855, Château Giscours) acquired the château, while working for decades to make it even more beautiful, rethinking the vineyard and infrastructure. The château will change hands in March 2021 with the arrival of the Helfrich family, who will ensure the continuity of this splendid estate.
