Château-Figeac boasts an 18th-century château flanked by a lovely 14-hectare park. This Premier Grand Cru Classé de Saint-Émilion, like Château Angélus, will reach the coveted “A” category in September 2022. Absolute consecration for this exceptional growth, which should have reached the highest rank much sooner, as was the case for Cheval Blanc and Ausone. Figeac, whose name comes from the ancient Figeacus family who settled on these lands in the 2nd century, is associated above all with one of the most appreciated and remarkable wine families: the Manoncourt. The family has owned this prestigious cru since 1892 and, after more than 125 years, is still at the helm of this Premier Grand Cru Classé. Thierry Manoncourt, a respected figure in the Libourne vineyards who passed away in 2010, truly created the Figeac style. In other words, a wine with a unique character, classy, elegant, harmonious, subtle and remarkably dense vintage after vintage. Over and above the know-how and expertise of the estate's teams, the DNA of these wines is essentially explained by the typology of the vineyard. This one, covering forty hectares in a single block, is a unique combination of several microclimates and three croups of Günzian gravel with clayey subsoils, the kind more often found in the Médoc or Graves regions. In Saint-Emilion, this type of combination is rarer. But Figeac has it, and in many ways explains why the cru and its wines are said to be “the most Medoc-like in the Libourne region.” In other words, the high proportion of Cabernet-Sauvignon in the vineyard (and in the blending of the wines), followed by Cabernet Franc (i.e. 2/3 Cabernet, Figeac having the highest proportion of Cabernet in the entire Right Bank) and Merlot, give Figeac wines a very Médoc style.
