La Tour Figeac, with its 14.6 hectares located on the rare gravelly areas of the Saint-Emilion Grand Cru appellation, was created in 1879 as a Grand Cru Classé. From the great Figeac estate (Château Figeac), when part of the 37-hectare Figeac estate, acquired by Mr. Corbière, was sold by him in 1882 to form what would become Châteaux La Tour du Pin and La Tour du Pin Figeac. The remaining 15-hectare estate then became La Tour Figeac, in reference to a tower on the estate. In 1955, with the first edition of the ten-year classification of Saint-Emilion crus classés, the estate was admitted to the ranks of the Grands Crus Classés de Saint-Emilion. Passing through the hands of several owners, it was finally in 1973 that the cru settled permanently with the Rettenmaier family. Otto Rettenmaier fell in love with it and, in his quest for excellence, developed the estate, not hesitating to call on the Derenoncourt couple (Christine and Stéphane) for technical advice and monitoring of each vintage. Bordering on Châteaux Figeac and Cheval Blanc, two stars of the Libourne vineyard, the 14.6-hectare vineyard is ideally situated on sandy and gravelly soils over clay subsoils. For the past ten years, Otto Rettenmaier has been cultivating his vines according to biodynamic principles, seeking even greater purity and expression in wines that are at once powerful, caressing and elegant, characteristics that are also found in the second house wine, “L'Esquisse de La Tour Figeac”.
