Clos Fourtet, First Great Classified Growth of Saint-Emilion

Learn more about the Premier Grand Cru Classé “B”, Clos Fourtet in the Saint-Emilion Grand Cru appellation.

With its 18.5 hectares in a single block on the highest western slopes of Saint-Emilion and surrounded by low walls (hence the term “Clos”), Clos Fourtet is ideally positioned at the entrance to the medieval village of Saint-Emilion. Formerly a small fort or “camp fortet” from which it takes its name, and whose purpose was to defend Saint-Emilion in times of war, this wine estate, Premier Grand Cru Classé “B” since 1955, is one of the most modest estates in terms of its architectural appearance, while its wines, with their international reputation, are of great distinction. Long owned by the famous dynastic Lurton family (André and Lucien Lurton) and managed by Pierre Lurton (CEO of Château D'Yquem and former Managing Director of Château Cheval Blanc), Clos Fourtet was bought in January 2001 by Philippe Cuvelier (originally from Hauts de France). This former shareholder and manager of the Guilbert paper group, which he sold in 1998, wanted to invest in wine. By acquiring a rare gem like Clos Fourtet, the Cuvelier family gave themselves a ticket into the very exclusive world of great French wines. Philippe and his son Matthieu Cuvelier took over the general management of the vineyard, and embarked on a quest for excellence, gradually giving priority to organic and biodynamic viticulture in the vineyards on the clay-limestone plateau. The wines produced by this Premier Grand Cru Classé “B” belong to the elite of Saint-Emilion and Right Bank wines. They are sought after by connoisseurs for their remarkable freshness, density, depth and complexity.
