Winegrowers since the 16th century, the Straubs cultivate with passion and authenticity, the art of vinifying wines typical of Alsace, loved for their sincerity and generosity. Located in the heart of Alsace's vineyards, on the wine route to Blienschwiller, their parcels and Domaine de La Tour magnify Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and Pinot in traditional, Grands Crus, Vendanges Tardives and Crémant d'Alsace declinations. Marie-Anne, Jean-François and Jean-Sébastien Straub promise you happiness in your glass.
The Straub family, based in the village of Blienschwiller, runs the Domaine de la Tour, an Alsatian estate. This family, which comes from a long line of winegrowers and coopers, was already cultivating vines in the 16th century. The generations passed on their passion for the craft and for good wines, and at the end of the 20th century, in 1985, it was Jean-François Straub's turn to take over from his father Joseph Straub and develop bottled sales. The range was soon expanded to include a number of wines, including one of Alsace's flagship products: Crémant de la Tour in the Crémant d'Alsace appellation. His wife, Anne-Marie, joined him in the 90s to take care of customer reception. In 2000, the family commissioned the construction of a new, all-stainless steel winery to modernize the technical facilities already in place, which were equipped with old, traditional foudres. The new winery will enable us to manage the parcels of land (so that each grape variety can best express itself in the wine) and to make wine more suited to the size of the estate's plots. The aim is to obtain more precise results in wines. In 2005, their son Jean-Sébastien Straub joined them. With his background in viticulture and oenology in Alsace (Rouffach) and Beaune in Burgundy, Jean-Sébastien brings a wealth of new ideas and experience essential to the brand's development. Involved both in the vineyard, where the estate practices integrated viticulture, and in the cellar, he is also involved in marketing the wines.
The estate comprises 15 hectares of vines. Tended like a large garden, the vineyard is managed using the “lutte raisonnée” method, paying careful attention to the needs of the plant and the soil in terms of inputs. By meticulously observing the vines, the winemakers can detect any diseases or deficiencies in the vines so as to be able to better interact with them. The soil is also worked to allow it to breathe more easily, so that microbial life can flourish and the plant is more likely to produce great grapes.
In the vat room, vinification is just as carefully thought out and reasoned, with each plot vinified separately. Why do we do this? Because each terroir and each plot, with its own grape variety (Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Gewurztraminer), must be able to express itself with the most credible authenticity. The grapes are hand-picked to preserve their quality, and then taken to the harvest reception area. Pressing, with a pneumatic press, is the stage that gently extracts each juice. Fermentation, which varies in length, takes place in the old tuns of the Domaine de La Tour, as well as in the modern winery to regulate fermentation temperatures (optimal control) and preserve the maximum aromas of each grape variety.
Domaine de la Tour produces wines of fine expression, much appreciated by Alsace wine drinkers. The family currently produces four wine families, starting with traditional wines, Grands Crus, Vendanges Tardives and, of course, the refreshing Crémants d'Alsace.
The Tradition range includes Riesling, Riesling vieilles vignes, Pinot Gris, Pinot Gris vieilles vignes, Pinot Noir cuvée Xavière, Pinot Noir vieilles vignes, Pinot Noir tradition and a rosé. The Grands Crus range includes Riesling Winzenberg, Pinot Gris Frankstein, Gewurztraminer Frankstein and Riesling Schieferberg. The Vendanges Tardives range (a highly reputed winemaking tradition in Alsace) offers a Riesling Vendanges Tardives, a Pinot Gris Vendanges Tardives, a Gewurztraminer Vendanges Tardives as well as a Sylvaner “Curiosité d'Axel” cuvée and, of course, a Pinot Gris-based Vins de Glace. Last but not least, Crémants with a Crémant Tentation, a Crémant Rosé and a Crémant Prestige. Domaine de la Tour wines are very typical Alsace wines, flattering without lacking personality.
The wine comes from exceptional plots in the Grand Cru Frankstein. The grapes enjoy ideal exposure to the sun, as they face south/southeast and the soil and subsoil are composed of granite. The wine is very bright. The nose is beautifully expressive, with complex notes of exotic fruit and spicy aromas. The palate is straightforward, lively, refreshing, balanced, fruity and long.
This cuvée is something of a UFO. Somewhere between a classic Gewurztraminer and a Vendanges Tardives, this cuvée is produced only in the best vintages, and implies the highest standards in its elaboration, based on irreproachable raw materials. The grapes are harvested almost over-ripe to obtain a beautiful concentration with a rich, generous aroma. Its gold color is radiant. The nose reveals very exotic fruity aromas of vineyard peaches and dried apricots. On the palate, it's concentrated, greedy and lively, giving freshness and balance on a finish full of overripe fruit. A real treat.
