Pessac-Léognan wines are Appellation Origin Controlled (AOC) they are produced in the Bordeaux wine region South-West of France. The wines of Pessac-Léognan are mainly red wines, although high quality dry white wines are also produced. Pessac-Léognan is home to several prestigious wine estates, such as Château Haut-Brion, Château La Mission Haut-Brion, Château Pape Clément and Château Smith Haut Lafitte, to name just a few ot them. PESSAC-LÉOGNAN HISTORY

The soils are composed of Pyrenean gravel, it is a soil poor in water, so the roots must draw the water they need from the subsoil. Grapes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Carmenere, Côt (Malbec), Petit Verdot. This appellation also produces white wine with grape varieties: Sauvignon, Sémillon, Muscadelle and Sauvignon Gris. The Graves appellation covers 3500 hectares for an average production of 115,000 hectoliters which are divided between 18% white wines and 82% red wines. Pessac-Leognan Red Wines are made from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grape varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon brings finesse and great power to the wine. The main aromas of Merlot are black fruits such as blackberry, blueberry, plum, strawberry, cherry and with the evolution of wine truffles, violets, licorice and game. There is also the Petit Verdot grape variety used in small quantities in red wine blends. It is a grape variety that likes gravelly and clay soils, it matures late. Pessac-Leognan white wines are made from Sémillon, Sauvignon and Muscadelle grape varieties, which offer fatness and roundness, Sauvignon brings aromatic power and freshness. |
