With over 900 years of history, since it was founded in 1141, the famous Clos de Tart, in the Morey-Saint-Denis appellation on the Côte de Nuits, is the largest Grand Cru-classified Monopole in Burgundy at 7.53 hectares. Created by the Bernardine nuns of the Abbey of Tart, a dependency of the Abbey of Cîteaux, the prestigious estate was, after the French Revolution, owned by the famous Marey-Monge family via the deputy Joseph Marey from 1791. The latter sold it at auction in 1932 to Mâcon wine merchant Henri Mommessin. The Mommessin family remained the sole owner until 2018, when the Pinault family, owners of historic estates including Château Latour in the Bordeaux region of Pauillac, bought it via their holding company Artémis Domaines. Driven by a perpetual quest for excellence, the Pinault family will begin renovation work in 2022. The vineyard has been certified organic since the 2018 vintage, and is currently managed biodynamically. The wines produced from this single, perfectly exposed parcel, situated in the middle of a stony hillside on a limestone subsoil, are wines of great distinction, with great depth and remarkable finesse.
