Learn more about Château Coutet, First Great Classified Growth in 1855 on the Barsac appellation, Sauternais region.

The wine estate was originally a military building. In 1643, it became a vineyard. Wine has been made here for over 350 years. The château is therefore one of the oldest estates in the Sauternes region, and also belonged for over a century to the de Lur Saluces family (Château d'Yquem and Château de Fargues). While Thomas Jefferson, future President of the United States, remarked during his stay in Bordeaux in 1787 that Château Coutet was the greatest Barsac, this qualitative esteem was later confirmed by the Imperial Classification of 1855, which included Coutet as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the Barsac appellation. But why Coutet? Derived from the Gascon word for “knife”, Coutet sweet wine evokes sharpness, liveliness and nervousness. These are the characteristics of the château's wines. The 38.5-hectare vineyard is managed by the Baly family (Philippe and Dominique). The château is technically and commercially co-managed and distributed exclusively by Baron Philippe de Rothschild S.A. Coutet is remarkable for the depth and consistency of its wines.
