Château Pavie Macquin, First Great Classified Growth of Saint-Emilion

Learn all about Château Pavie Macquin, Premier Grand Cru Classé “B”, in the Saint-Emilion Grand Cru appellation.

It was Albert Macquin (1852-1911) who founded Pavie Macquin in the second half of the 19th century. He was no ordinary man, and Saint-Emilion owes him a debt of gratitude. Indeed, this student of Paris-Grignon and Montpellier specialized in the study of rootstocks and the art of grafting. In other words, Saint-Émilion owes him the use of the grafted plant, which saved the vineyard totally ruined by phylloxera at the end of the 19th century. His contribution is therefore not insignificant. The 15-hectare cru is owned by the Corre-Macquin family. Its vineyards overlook the Fongaban valley to the west, just opposite the medieval town, and are admirably situated on Saint-Émilion's highest plateau, just above the limestone ledge of the famous Grande Côte. With its clay-limestone soil, the vines here benefit from effective, permanent natural drainage, with the key point being a very regular water supply, enabling the grapes to develop in excellent conditions, even in periods of drought. Since the 90s, the vines have been cultivated organically and biodynamically on the initiative of Nicolas Thienpont, assisted by the renowned consultant oenologist Stéphane Derenoncourt, who also worked at Château Canon-La Gaffelière at the time. In terms of style, the wines are fresh, purely aromatic and chiselled on the palate. The wines are both powerful (a characteristic of the clays) and refined. Pavie Macquin is one of the most sought-after Premiers Grand Crus Classés among connoisseurs.
