Château Rieussec, First Classified Growth in 1855.

Learn more about Château Rieussec, First Great Classified Growth in 1855 on the Sauternes appellation.

Located in the Sauternes region at Fargues, near Langon, next to Yquem and Château de Fargues, Rieussec was long owned by the monks of the Carmes de Langon until the 18th century. Rieussec's second wine, Carmes de Rieussec, is a tribute to them. Its wines were already well known by this time. Seized during the French Revolution, the property was acquired by the Mareilhac family until 1846. In 1855, the château was classified Premier Grand Cru Classé de Sauternes, and changed hands 10 times before it was bought out permanently in 1984 by Domaines Bardons de Rothschild (Lafite), in partnership with Belgian Albert Frère (co-owner of Cheval Blanc with Bernard Arnault). The Dassault family (Château Dassault) has owned 5% of the estate since 2010. With this acquisition, Baron Eric de Rothschild and his associates immediately set their sights on re-establishing Rieussec at the top of the list, behind d'Yquem. Since 2017, his daughter Saskia de Rothschild, has been rejuvenating the communication codes for the estate and the wines by dressing them in an opaque recycled glass bottle with a simplified engraved label. In 2021, Rieussec begins its conversion to organic farming and expands its vineyard to 93 hectares. Its exceptional terroir of undulating gravelly soils under a clay subsoil produces full-bodied, airy, concentrated and well-balanced wines that are appreciated by wine lovers the world over.
