Château Soutard, Great Classified Growth of Saint-Emilion

Learn more about sur Great Classified Growth, Château Soutard, located on Saint-Emilion Grand Cru appellation.

Located near the medieval town of Saint-Emilion, the Grand Cru Classé Château Soutard, a sumptuous estate acquired by AG2R La Mondiale in 2006, has been cultivating vines since 1513, when the estate was known as Bourdieu de Mayne de Soutard, “Bourdieu” meaning an estate around a farm and mill. The current château, before its complete renovation in 2015, was built in 1741 at the request of the daughter of Jean Couture, Jurat de Saint-Emilion, who owned the property in 1699. The Carthusian monastery's winegrowing vocation emerged in the 17th century, under the leadership of Jean Combret de Faurie. In the early 19th century, the estate became the property of Hyacinthe Lavau, a renowned winemaker. Michel des Ligneris, an old aristocratic family from Saint-Emilion, inherited the estate, and it was his descendants who carried on his work until François de Ligneris, a colorful figure in Libourne viticulture. It was then that the mutual insurance, provident and pension group AG2R La Mondiale bought the château in 2006. Following extensive renovation work when it was first purchased, and again in 2014, the château has reopened in a sumptuous setting where the former Carthusian monastery shines in all its glory, offering a top-of-the-range wine tourism experience. The vineyard's current 30 hectares are located on the limestone plateau of Saint-Emilion. The wines produced here by Véronique Corporandy, the cellar master, under the direction of Bertrand de Villaines, manager since 2011, are both powerful and elegant.
