Château Trottevieille, First Great Classified Growth of Saint-Emilion

Discover the Premier Grand Cru Classé “B”, Château Trottevieille in the Saint-Emilion Grand Cru appellation.

This 1955 Saint-Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé “B” is intriguingly named. The explanation comes from a legend according to which an old lady who lived on the estate centuries ago trotted to a post office stop. Each time a carriage stopped, the old lady trotted down, hence the name “Trottevieille”. This legend is repeated in the second wine created in 2002, La Dame de TrotteVieille. Since 1950, the château and its vineyards have belonged to the Borie-Manoux group, one of Bordeaux's leading wine merchants, run by the Castéja family, including the charismatic Philippe Castéja, who also owns other prestigious châteaux in the Bordeaux region, including Pauillac Haut-Bages Monpelou, Lynch-Moussas and Batailley (Crus Classés in 1855), Beau-Site in Saint-Estèphe, and L'Eglise and La Croix du Casse in Pomerol. The 12-hectare Trottevieille vineyard is a clay terroir resting on the limestone plateau, and forms the “Enclos de Trottevieille”. The vineyard is managed using the “lutte raisonnée” method, which respects the development of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon in soils that have not been sclerosed by the excessive use of systemic products. The wines produced here have a very mineral character, with a freshness and elegance worthy of all the Premiers Grands Crus Classés of the Right Bank. Cabernet Franc, including a pre-phylloxera parcel (a treasure), plays a major role in these wines, which could be considered traditional, classic without lacking a modern touch.
