Adjacent to the medieval town of Saint-Emilion, Château Villemaurine owes its name to the fact that in the 7th century, the Moors set up an entrenched camp in a place known as “Ville Maure”, which over time became known as Villemaurine. In the early 17th century, this 7-hectare estate came into the hands of Antoine Limouzin, a local notable and Libourne's first port clerk. After many owners, it was in 2005 that a wine-loving Belgian businessman, already at the helm of Château Prieuré-Lichine (Cru Classé 1855 in Margaux) on behalf of the Ballande family, bought Villemaurine for the beauty of the site and the potential of the terroir. A wine enthusiast and connoisseur thanks to his work as a wine merchant since 1982 (Sovex Grands Châteaux), Justin Onclin produced his first vintage in 2007. With the help of consultant oenologist Stéphane Derenoncourt, Justin Onclin will be producing fresh, complex and dense wines until 2021, from a single vineyard located on a clay-limestone plateau with a base of asteriated limestone. Justin Onclin began technical renovations (new vat room, new cellar), while at the same time highlighting the château's underground heritage: immense underground cellars dug into the old limestone quarries, which have been open to visitors since 2010. The wines rest there in ideal conditions. In 2021, the property changed hands and Justin Onclin sold the vineyard to the Lefevère family, who already owned Châteaux Sansonnet, Moulin du Cadet and Soutard Cadet in Saint-Emilion.
