Pomerol History   It is in the Pomerol appellation that we find the famous Château Petrus which is one of the most sought-after and renowned wines in the whole world, it is equal with the great classified growths of all the Bordeaux vineyards. This wine-growing setting is one of the most famous vineyards in the world. The Pomerol vineyard is very old since it dates back to the Romans and then it was developed by the Hospitallers of Saint-Jean-de-Jérusalem who cultivated the vines of this parish. For the pilgrims of Santiago de Compostela who passed through Pomerol they found comfort and hospitality, necessary to continue their pilgrimage to the Pyrenees and who then continued towards Spain. In the Middle Ages, the Pomerol vineyard was largely developed thanks to the Commanderies of the Hospitallers of Saint-Jean-de-Jérusalem, of which today the Knights of Malta are the heirs. There are old stones in Pomerol that served as markers for the Domaine de la Commanderie des Hospitaliers, on these markers the Maltese Cross was carved. The Knights of Malta protected healthy bonds and cared for pilgrims. Today, to perpetuate the tradition, the Hospitallers hold high the banner of the Pomerol Appellation in the world. The vineyard was rebuilt after the Hundred Years War and by the wars of religion. The Pomerol vineyard has developed and been revitalized by the arrival of families coming mainly from the Corrèze department (France) and Belgium who have developed the wine trading activity. The vineyards are mostly owned by families and are small areas. The Pomerol appellation has 138 properties, of which only twenty have a surface area of more than 10 hectares. In the 5th century, the Roman Empire collapsed which allowed viticulture to pass into the hands of Christianity for its development because wine was a central element of the cult. Viticulture was introduced to this region by the Romans and intensified in the Middle Ages. The vineyards of the Saint-Emilion region benefit from their location on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela and, from the 11th century, many monasteries, hospices and churches were built in the region. In the 12th century the English government gave the special status of Jurisdiction, and it was when Eleanor of Aquitaine married Henri Plantagenêt who would become Henry II of England that the town of Saint-Emilion which was fortified was attached to the Crown of England.

AOC LALANDE DE POMEROL

Lalande de Pomerol is a satellite of Pomerol, as in Pomerol the presence of the vine dates back to the Romans. Before 1978 the town was called La Lande de Libourne to become today Lalande de Pomerol. Why did the town change its name? Because in fact she wanted to obtain the appellation. The surface of the Lalande de Pomerol vineyard is approximately 1300 hectares. The town is separated from Pomerol by a river: Barbanne. The soil is composed of sand and gravel. As in Pomerol, we find the grape varieties of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cot (1%). It is a powerful deep red wine.

Grapes
The wines of Lalande-Pomerol are mainly produced from the Merlot grape variety, which is largely dominant in this region. CHÂTEAU BEAUREGARD

The history of this Château dates back to the 12th century and to the Knights Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem, to whom we owe the emblem of Château Beauregard, which is the famous Templar Cross. CHÂTEAU GAZIN

CHÂTEAU DES ANNEREAUX – LALANDE DE POMEROL

A family property since 1390, the Château owes its first hour of glory to a woman. Indeed, at the end of the 19th century, Caroline Ponsot, a young widow, inherited the property and she was recognized by her peers as "the Girondin emblem of a woman's victory over the devastating scourge". It will be the first in the fight against phylloxera (a harmful insect that attaches to many species of vines, both wild and cultivated) on its own vineyard. Following this, she was crowned with success for her work on American rootstocks and the Château des Annereaux became the example to follow and was praised for the eminent specialists of the time. This 25-hectare Château has been cultivating organic farming since 2010. In 2016, Benjamin Hessel took over the estate on his own in a desire for continuity and excellence while preserving the environment and the practice of agroecology.

CHÂTEAU PERRON LALANDE DE POMEROL

Built in 1642, Château Perron is one of the oldest buildings in Lalande de Pomerol. In 1958 this Château became the property of the Massonie Family who acquired it two years after a terrible frost which destroyed a third of the vines. This estate now extends over 23 hectares and is carried by three brothers and sisters Bertrand and Béatrice who cultivate the vines and Thibault who is the wine merchant. They produce several wines from the Lalande de Pomerol appellation such as Château Perron, Château Perron la Fleur and Château Pierrefitte. VIGNOBLES ALAIN CHAUMET

This vineyard located in Lalande de Pomerol has been a family property since 1852 and covers 3 properties in AOC Lalande de Pomerol, AOC Montagne Saint Emilion and in Bordeaux. The history of this vineyard is a mixture of passion and love. At the time, the vines were not the only thing present on the property because they also had a farm with cows and a real horse dealer. However, they wanted to develop viticulture because they were passionate about wine. Suzanne and Gérard Chaumet passed on their passion to their son Alain Chaumet who, upon his death in 2008, passed it on to his wife Françoise Chaumet, who now works with her daughter Claire Chaumet. PARC DU CHÂTEAU DE SIAURAC

This park, registered on the list of Historic Monuments, has been classified as a Remarkable Garden by the Ministry of Culture. The space of the park was shaped in the 18th century and appeared on the map of Pierre de Belleyme in 1766 who was the geographical engineer of King Louis XV. This place named Bois Percés is divided by alleys with green rooms at the crossroads. Everything is organized in symmetry and around the Serpentine which is a river in the shape of a ribbon or s which is the symbol of naturalist gardens. You will be able to walk in the alleys of the park and see remarkable trees that are hundreds of years old.

MUSÉE DES BEAUX-ARTS ET LA CHAPELLE DU CARMEL

The Carmel Chapel, which is a former Carmelite convent dedicated to the Marian cult, hence the inscription on the pediment in Latin Immaculatae Virgini, became a cultural center of Contemporary Art of national scope after the departure of the nuns attached to the Carmel of Prouillan in 1972. EGLISE SAINT CYR ET SAINTE JULITTE DE POMEROL

Dedicated to Saint Cyr and Saint Julitte, a mother and her son, Christian martyrs of the 4th century, it was built in the 13th century. Appreciated for its very beautiful altarpiece in sculpted and gilded wood from the 17th century in the Baroque style, the church extends over the perimeter of the old ramparts of the city and consists of a nave with three naves of four bays. The bell tower is based on an old defensive construction and has a very beautiful terrace at the top.

EGLISE SAINT-JEAN DE LALANDE DE POMEROL

The Church of Saint-Jean is a Romanesque building from the 12th century which is composed of a single nave with barrel-vaulted vaulting with transverse beams falling on engaged columns with capitals sculpted with characters. Its western facade has a dove higher than the nave crowned with three gables surmounted by stone crosses. It is pierced by two bays with pointed arches containing the bells. On the western facade it is possible to see a door with monolithic columns with carved capitals. The cross of its cemetery which has a trunk decorated with architectural motifs of Gothic inspiration embellished with a statuette of the Virgin and Child which has been listed as a Historic Monument.
